Hi All, I had dinner last week with Debbie Dyer, Cathy Raptoulis & Diane Evans. Deb told me about this website. Very cool. I was in the class of '71 but knew many in your class... My brother John was class of '69 & my sis Beverly was '67. I am divorced & I live in Shelby Twp with my 2 kids. My son is 22 yrs old & my daughter is 20. Earned my Bachelors degree, worked in the automobile industry for years. My brother John lives in Houston. He comes to MI every summer for a month or so. Just found this page somehow??? Nice to see so many names that I
remember. I was Class of JAN 71, kind of in the middle of both
classes.
I am still in contact with Polly Herald, Larry Corley, Diane Evans,
Cathy Raptoulis, and Brenda Brummer 71. Been married a few times,
but happily this past 11 years. I had twin boys and a third son,
plus 3 stepchildren, (all which lived with us when we married in the
90's). First grandchild due in the fall. God Bless everyone in these
trying times.

Really love this site. I'm always sad to see the

Hi Gang! Just dropping this note for the benefit of those who check this site, and to bring them 'up-to-speed' on Dan Hummel (Class President, June of '70). Dan is fighting a tough battle, but his spirit and outlook are excellent. As of this writing, Dan is in St. Joe's, Pontiac, but with a little luck will be discharged on Monday. I just surfed into this cool site. I went to Kindergarten at Finney. We lived on Cadieux down near the Cadieux Cafe. I graduated from Bishop Gallagher in '71. I hope that's OK!!! A good friend, John Marzolf graduated from Finney in '68. I'll never forget the Carom Club, Daly's and right next door Geneva's is still there. This is amazing. You guys have been doing this website for YEARS! I just happened on George Verras, Kim Rider and Nancy Gilleland on Facebook while I was there "accidentally". :-) So sad to hear of the deaths of "kids" I knew. And the teachers. I have thought of Bill Rockey often over the years.
I was widowed in 1998, no kids, living in Minneapolis. Went to Central for undergrad, then hung out there for an MA in clinical psych. Practiced psychology for 22 years, tossed it in when I discovered landscape architecture. Another Master's and now working for the State of Minnesota and happy as a clam.

It's been a lot of years and miles and I hesitate to ask, but here goes! I graduated Finney in June 1970. Since then it's been many jobs, a variety of vacations, all in all, a pretty decent time of it! A little glitch has come about recently. From November 25th through December 3rd, 2008, I was in Pontiac
Osteopathic Hospital, where I was diagnosed with stage four cancer of the larynx! I now sport a trach tube, a peg tube (goes directly into stomach to feed) and chemo ports! Please don't take this as a complaint or feel sorry for me! My plan with the grace of God is to beat this condition! What I am asking, along with prayer, is any small donation to help with medical supplies, meds, toiletries, etc. I am indigent, was homeless for over two years, until my brother took me in, but he is on limited fixed income himself. I have applied for social security disability - but how soon that will become viable is a question mark! These are troubled times in the world, our country and especially financially for Michiganders, but if you could spare something to tide me over - it will be a blessing never forgotten.

I guess I am the first to wish Happy New Year - Jan 6, 2009 - last year was a bummer - I have seen my good Greek friend George Verras a few times over the past two years (2 funerals - my parents) - had lunch together and he mentioned names that I hardly remember. Yes, hard to believe it has been 39 years since we left the confines of Finney High. My British snob husband says 'Finney has a lot to answer for' implying that I didn't get a good education. I beg to differ as I had excellent teachers, great friends and a wonderful 4 years there.

While reading today's Detroit News, I happened upon a death notice for Mrs. Helen Ackerman (Oct. 14, 2008). Some of us had taken Mrs. Ackerman's English class, and she taught Latin as well. It was in her class that I gained an appreciation for some of the great authors, such as Maugham, Steinbeck, Capote and others.

I was 2 years behind most of you...graduated in 72, but I recognize so many of your names and probably graduated with your younger sibs. I've been living in California for 7 years, but I get back to Michigan every few years to visit family and friends. I still get together with my buds from Finney and Gallagher when I'm home.
Some of you might remember my sister Denise who should have graduated in 69. She passed away in October 2003.

little update, some of you know I had cancer in 2005. It has come back and is metastatic. It's on my lungs (both) and back in my neck. I tried radiation and Erbitux to no avail. It didn't slow it down, and I asked how long I might have and as of 3 months ago it was less than a year. I stopped treatment as I would only have bought a few months if it worked at all, so rather than be miserable I opted to enjoy the little time I have left. Feel free to write if you like. I'm in a really good place and I have my daughter and grandchildren living with me. I couldn't be more delighted with them here. Actually I think I'm happier than I have ever been. It's nice to see everyone posting here. I hope all is well with each and every one of you. Finney and all of my classmates are a very fond memory for me. Some of you I've seen after

The last time I saw Kirk Lippert was about 5 or 6 years ago at Cobo Hall when Microsoft was having a Dog and Pony show for Windows 2003. Growing up, Kirk was like a character in a Mark Twain novel. Always in some sort of pleasant mischief. You knew that the day would be other then ordinary when you were around Lippert. We used to take our model cars out in the winter and attach solid fuel rockets to them that we bought from the hobby shop and launch them down the ruts on Kensington, because they never plowed the streets in the winter.
But this day he seemed tired, pre-occupied, quiet. He was smoking a cigarette. In his youth he would sneak one as an instrument of rebellion and independence, but now he seemed to hold it in his hand as if it were his sole companion, that never left him, no matter what. Each puff was letting a little more life leak out, a little less smile emerge and now he seemed like he was in the rut, although he never let on.
"See ya around man... take care." I think that was probably the last thing we said to each other.
For some odd reason this quote from Gilda Radner popped into my head...
"I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next.”
That was the cool thing about Lippert way back when, was that you never knew what was going to happen next. | | | |

Yeah, I survived the sixties also! I should have been graduated in 69 but I was too busy rebelling. If it wasn't for a wonderful English teacher, Ruth Roman, who saw something in me, I probably would still be in Detroit working a punch press. Anyway, I was graduated from WSU with a bachelor's degree in Journalism and then spent the next seven years as a
news writer and editor in Michigan and California. I quit the news biz about 20 years ago and have been working in the High Tech widget world in Silicon Valley. I never married or had children though I came close a few times. Over the years in northern California I've spent my free time racing cafe motorcycles, raising horses, mountain biking and racing sailboats on San Francisco Bay. Life is great! My prayers and condolences go out to the family of Mr. Ernest Stengel, the most influential teacher of my high school career. Mr. Stengel knew my home life was a living hell, recognized my innate intelligence, and gave me the opportunity to study great existentialist authors independently in his office. Though I ultimately quit school due to a violent confrontation with another student, Mr. Stengel's love and support saved me from taking my own life and gave me the confidence to pursue a university degree. Today, I am a teacher. Just as Mr. Stengel held me to a high standard of excellence, I do the same for all my students, treating them with respect and love. Were it not for Mr. Stengel's care and concern, I would be dead. Thank you, Mr. Stengel, for believing in my potential. 8-0 One teacher really CAN change the world. 8-0 |
