(1) Charles Maoilani

Don't know how many of you took Spanish while at Finney or knew Mr. Maiolani, but I thought I would let folks know that Charlie died this past Tuesday, July 27, 2004, in Traverse City, MI, where he had lived for about 20 years.
On Monday, he was celebrating his 82nd birthday at the home of one of his sons, with his family and local friends around him, was feeling well physically and more upbeat than he had since losing his wife 5 years ago. He felt dizzy, passed out and was effectively gone that night from a massive stroke. He died after being removed from life support Tuesday a.m.
It's just how Charlie would have liked to go. He was healthy, vital and active right up to the end; he was surrounded by good friends and family and he was enjoying a beautiful night in the countryside.
He and I had maintained a friendship all these years and I'm just glad now I saved ever letter he wrote me. He was a terrific man and like a second father to me. It's ironic, but my own father also passed on his birthday, but not under such good or quick circumstances...
